Inspiration
Ways to experience Morocco
Medinas, desert, mountains and ocean: what each landscape offers, and the city guides to start from.

Medinas and living heritage
Morocco has nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, among them the medinas of Fez, Marrakech, Tétouan and Essaouira, the imperial city of Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Their souks, madrasas and crafts quarters are still part of daily life.

Desert and dunes
The great dune seas are Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga beyond M’Hamid, in the far south-east. Closer to Marrakech, the stony Agafay desert is an easy half-day trip for a sunset or a camel ride.

Mountains and gorges
The High Atlas rises south of Marrakech, crowned by Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Further east, the Todra and Dades gorges cut through red rock; in the north, the Rif mountains frame the blue town of Chefchaouen.

Atlantic coast and surf
Taghazout, north of Agadir, is Morocco’s best-known surf village. Essaouira’s steady trade winds draw kitesurfers and windsurfers, and the lagoon of Dakhla, far to the south, is a kitesurfing destination in its own right.

Food, markets and mint tea
Tajines slow-cooked in clay, couscous (inscribed by UNESCO as shared Maghreb heritage in 2020) and sweet mint tea poured from a height. The evening food stalls of Jemaa el-Fnaa and the spice souks of Fez are a meal and a show at once.

Riads, gardens and hammams
A riad is a traditional house built around a courtyard garden; many are now guesthouses. Marrakech’s Majorelle Garden, created by the painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, and the restored hammams of Fez show the same art of shade, water and tile.

Practical guide
Planning a trip to Morocco
Three things worth knowing before you build a trip around an event.
When to go
Spring and autumn are mild almost everywhere. Summer is very hot inland, in Marrakech, Fez and the desert, but cooler on the Atlantic coast; in winter the High Atlas gets snow while the south stays sunny. The event calendar follows the seasons too.
Getting around
ONCF trains link Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fez and Marrakech, and the Al Boraq high-speed train runs between Tangier and Casablanca. Long-distance coaches reach the south and the coast. Each event page estimates the distance from the venue to the places around it.
Money and time
The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD); you can show prices in euros, dollars or pounds as an indication. Morocco is on UTC+1 for most of the year and switches to UTC+0 during Ramadan: event times on MoroccanPlans are always local times.
